Garage Door Operator Issues

Writer: Chip RiggieChip Riggie

When it comes to your garage door operator (garage door opener as many call them), many people just don't quite understand them. There is so much to know. The different types, brands, sizes, options, etc... But properly diagnosing issues is what we are talking about here. We receive so many calls that go like this... "I hit the button, my door started to go up, and then it closed. My garage door opener is broke". Well, here's the thing, you might be right, but chances are underlying issues. Often times, this means that you have a broken spring. The operator just isn't strong enough to lift the door without the garage door springs doing their job. The springs and operator works together, hand and hand. As mentioned in a previous blog post referring to horsepower, we get many calls from customers asking for a 3/4 horse power operator. "I have a big 2 car door, I need a 3/4 horse". What people fail to realize is that the springs should be doing the heavy lifting of your garage door, not your operator. The operator practically just guides your balanced garage door up and down. If it's doing the work, you have a problem with the door itself. Next comes the issue of closing. Often people think that if their garage door isn't closing, their is an issue with the door. Or, sometimes the transmitter (remote) or keyless entry wont work. We get many calls on this issue. Often times we ask our customer, "If you hold the wall button the whole time will it close?" Yes? Ok. Your door is not broke, chances are, what is happening is your photo eye sensors are being disrupted, rather it be misalignment, bad wiring, something in the way etc... This will cause your door to not close without holding the wall button through the down cycle and your wireless transmitters will not work to close the door. This will not effect opening the door only closing. These are the most common calls we receive when it comes to operator issues. We hope this blog answers some operator issues that you may run into and will help you understand garage door operators better. If you ever need our services please call or text (989) 600-9338. God Bless.
